About the Conference

The focus of The Forum is collaboration. At The Forum, the IAIABC's 12 committees and councils meet to discuss policy and administrative issues and challenges in workers' compensation. Special seminars and workshops on hot industry topics and trends also take place at The Forum.

Through the exchange of ideas, information, and strategies, attendees of The Forum learn from each other and develop relationships and networks they can use throughout their careers in the industry.

There are plenty of reasons why your peers have been attending The Forum year after year, including:

  • In-depth dialogue in committee meetings about regulatory issues and updates

Who Attends?

The Forum is attended by regulators, administrators, medical directors, claims administrators, medical providers, services providers, government affairs, administrative law judges, insurers, and other industry stakeholders.

You do not need to be an IAIABC committee member to attend and participate in The Forum. All are welcome!

New to the IAIABC or The Forum? Participate in the New Attendee Orientation to hear about Association activities and what to expect for committee meetings and special sessions this week.

Medical Issues Committee Meeting

Hear leading research from NCCI that examines time to treatment measures at the state, regional, and national level. In attempting to understand the effects of the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, NCCI looked at whether the increase in demand for primary care services by newly insured people under the ACA, crowded out access to the same services by workers compensation claimants. A 2019 research update discusses changes seen in time to initial treatment and what it might say about access to care concerns or insight on the effectiveness of various medical management strategies. Following, Medical Issues will discuss the joint project on medical fee schedules and address other jurisdictional issues related to healthcare policy.

IAIABC/NAWCJ Judges' Program

Judges' Program attendees will hear a spotlight on the California dispute resolution system followed by a comparative law review of specific states in the U.S. Click here for the schedule.

EDI Claims Committee Meeting

Review pending IRRs and Proposed Resolutions. The Committee will receive an update from the work group that has been evaluating the inclusion of supporting documents with reporting events. A training update and a status of states adopting or transitioning to Release 3.1 will also be provided.

Dispute Resolution Committee Meeting

The Committee continues its partnership with the NAWCJ to offer a Judges' Program at The Forum and will discuss plans for a Mediators' College offering at Convention.  The Committee will also hear updates to the IAIABC sponsored dispute resolution project and hear a presentation on attorney's fees for MSAs for workers' compensation settlements.

Heads of Delegation and Associate Members' Forum

Representatives from more than 30 jurisdictions will discuss policy, regulatory, and legislative challenges and successes with their peers and industry stakeholders in attendance. 

EDI Medical Provider to Payer (ProPay) Committee Meeting

A status of all pending projects for eBilling and State Reporting will be provided. The committee will identify additional resources that may be helpful to our membership. We will examine the regulatory landscape including Federal initiatives and their impact to the standards.

The Regulation Committee is organizing a subcommittee to look at best practices for regulating PEOs and will hear an update on progress.  The Committee will continue discussion on recent PTSD legislation, resources for injured workers, and putting together a session for the Convention program.

Attendees will hear about the Committee's current project, "A How-To Guide to Injury and Disability Prevention," a follow to the paper, "Return to Work: A Foundational Approach to Return to Function." Hear presentation on return to work from the Social Insurance Fund of the Russian Federation as well as the Montana Employment Relations Division.

Technology touches every aspect of our lives. During the Medical Institute, hear how advanced technologies are transforming medicine from diagnosis to treatment. Changing Employment Relationships Seminar

A formal employer/employee relationship is the basis for workers' compensation coverage. As employment relationships shift in countries around the globe, considerations for occupational injury, illness, and fatality protection must be addressed. During this seminar, explore the different ways individuals are connecting to work and how that impacts occupational safety and workers' compensation. Policymakers from the United States, Germany, and Russia will discuss how coverage might be extended and industry leaders will share private solutions that are emerging.

EDI Systems Committee Meeting

The committee will evaluate recently approved IRRs and identify changes that are needed to support the approved resolutions. The group will continue to evaluate the Electronic Trading Partner documents including the Transmission Profile.

EDI Proof of Coverage Committee Meeting

The committee will receive an update from the WCIO regarding the WCPOLS reporting standard and proposed changes. The group will look at the landscape of states transitioning to Release 3.0 as well as those adopting XML. The committee will evaluate training and identify opportunities for future offerings.

Modernization Projects Seminar 

Jurisdictions across the U.S. are implementing technology solutions to improve customer service and enhance administrative efficiency. Hear in-depth overview of the functions, process, and lessons learned during one jurisdiction's modernization project. After the jurisdictional demonstration, attendees will appreciate a vendor showcase. Four vendors will have fifteen minutes each to share the skills, talents and capabilities they can bring to make modernization projects successful. Part demonstration and part Q&A, this session goes beyond the basics and digs into detail, giving attendees the ideal forum to gather solutions, expand their toolbox, and gain knowledge to "make their own mistakes."

International Committee Meeting

The International Committee will again host an international jurisdiction to give a spotlight presentation and will discuss 2019 committee plans and projects.

EDI XML Task Group Meeting

The XML Task Group will work with committee chairs to get updates on current issues/project. The group will identify changes that are needed to the ACORD Workers Compensation Standard based on the recently approved IRRS for Claims and Proof of Coverage. The group will also assess the landscape of states adopting XML.

Associate Member Council Meeting

Hear about the Associate Member Council's two subcommittee projects on telemedicine and a joint project with the Medical Issues Committee on fee schedules. AMC members will also discuss membership recruitment and outreach, as well as hear from attendees about current industry issues.

Research and Standards Committee Meeting

Review responses to the current Claims Measures Survey, results of which will be published later in 2019. Attendees will also discuss the Committee's "Project 19" about the 19 Essential Recommendations from 1972, and the IAIABC's National Conversations from 2016. Attendees will also hear from New York regarding a report on their IME program, and also discuss drug formularies and their impact on injured workers.

EDI Council Meeting

The EDI Council will hear EDI committee reports, look at the 2018 audited financials, and receive an update on EDI membership. The EDI Council will also elect EDI Council Chairs and hear from the Claims Steering Committee.
