Return to Work is a Process

Discussing return-to-work early—before full recovery—sets expectations for the worker and can help reduce their fears. For those who manage claims and support the claim process, your messaging and proactive communication can help workers (and employers) see that staying connected to the workplace reduces isolation and speeds recovery, even when a worker can’t perform their full role.

Remember that the longer a worker remains disconnected from work, the harder their return becomes, ultimately making the claim more difficult to manage. Absence from work should never be the default of a workers’ compensation system.

Return-to-work progress won’t always look dramatic but is often incremental. Increased tolerance, partial duties, and improved confidence all matter. Celebrate a worker’s forward motion, even when it’s small steps. Keep in mind that recovery isn’t linear and setbacks are common and should be expected. Don’t view them as failures but as opportunities for patience and adaptability.
